Barnes & Noble Inc. said Tuesday that the PIN pad devices used by customers to swipe credit and debit cards have been tampered with in 63 of its stores in nine states, including four in New Jersey stores and one of them is the Howell store on Rt 9.

Barnes & Noble is advising their customers who have swiped their cards at any of the affected stores to change their debit-card PIN numbers and check their statements for unauthorized transactions.

Still, the company said its customer database was secure, and that purchases made on the Barnes & Noble website, Nook e-reader and Nook mobile apps were not affected. It also said none of the pads at its college campus stores were affected.
