Oxygen is essential for life.

Most of us take it for granted. We’ve had all the oxygen we’ve needed all our lives.

But not everyone is so fortunate.

Those stricken with Covid-19, in many cases, suffer from a multitude of symptoms. But, doctors say, there is one elixir that is more potent than any other: oxygen.

So how does a Covid-19 patient get the oxygen that he or she needs?

The answer is an oxygen concentrator. A concentrator provides oxygen to a patient in their homes, obviating the need to enter already overcrowded and overburdened hospitals. The needed treatment can be brought to the patient’s house. It is very literally a lifesaver.

But there’s a problem. In Eretz Yisroel, these devices are nearly impossible to obtain, and even those that can be purchased cost an exorbitant amount of money.

The Darkei Miriam organization, recognizing this need, has stepped in to raise the funds necessary to deliver concentrators to Covid-19 patients whose recovery depends on them. The benefit is twofold: Patients receive the oxygen that they desperately need, and they can receive this treatment in the safety and comfort of their own homes.

These patients are counting on us. Right now, 1,000 concentrators are needed. Also needed are 10,000 oximeters, an electronic device that measures the oxygen carried in a person’s blood.

We must do what we can to step up and help the Jews in Israel whose lives very literally hang in the balance.

This project of Darkei Miriam is being facilitated by Bikur Cholim of Lakewood, ensuring that once the funds are raised, the oxygen concentrators can be purchased swiftly and delivered to those who need them most.

The Rand family cant do it without you!

As a Kehilla, we have endured overwhelming tragedy over these many months. Again a tragedy of unbelievable scope, a young wife and mother plucked from her family. Bashie Rand was just 37 years old and in good health just two weeks ago. With no warning or ability to plan she leaves behind a husband and three children.

The family only recently moved to the East Coast from Henderson, NV. While they accomplished so much in Henderson and were pillars of the community, they left the community they loved out of pure mesiras nefesh in seeking out a high school for their oldest child and yeshivos for the other two children.

In addition, Bashie was a speech therapist by profession. Through this role she was able to help hundreds of children struggling with their speech, however, with her passing, it leaves not only a loss for the community at large and all the many children’s lives she has impacted through her work but also a significant loss of income for the family.

Somehow, Bashie’s husband and children will need to begin the process of picking up the broken pieces. They cannot do this alone. Mi K’amcha Yisrael! At a time of need is when we as a kahal are at our finest.

With three young children to raise, no income, and a home to maintain we ask that you open your hearts and contribute. Help to carry them through this most difficult time, help to give them what they need. No longer do they have their mother but they have us, Klal Yisrael!

As with anything in life, when many people contribute toward one goal, it places less of a strain on each individual. So, what do you get when thousands of Jewish families across the United States join forces? Lower healthcare costs for everyone. That’s the driving philosophy behind United Refuah and that’s how members are saving as much as $10,000 – $20,000 each year on their healthcare expenses.

What’s a health-share?

For decades, various religious groups have utilized health-sharing in order to mitigate the crushing financial strain that traditional healthcare costs have placed on their community members. Ultimately, these health-sharing programs allow members of their faith an opportunity to share in each other’s costs while significantly cutting out administrative costs and medical expenses that run contrary to traditional religious beliefs or are otherwise considered unnecessary.

It wasn’t until the foundation of United Refuah HealthShare in 2018, that Jewish American families had the opportunity to do the same without compromising on their beliefs.

United Refuah is a non-profit, health-sharing organization that was founded to meet a pressing need within the Jewish community. Since its inception, it has remained true to its original mission: providing the Jewish community with an effective and affordable way to manage its healthcare expenses. Members’ costs are so low because there is no unnecessary overhead to cover and no investors at the top collecting profit. That means United Refuah members slash their healthcare expenses – often by as much as ten or twenty thousand dollars a year!

So, how exactly does it work?

 Simply put, members make low monthly contributions to their ShareFund based on their family size. When a member encounters a healthcare expense, the funds in their ShareFund are first accessed to pay for those expenses. If the member does not have sufficient funds in their own ShareBox, the healthcare costs are split between other members, resulting in dramatically lower healthcare costs and dramatically higher satisfaction rates. So, not only do members save as much as tens of thousands of dollars a year, their monthly payments are directly helping other Jewish members with their healthcare expenses.

United Refuah members share in preventative care, sick care, hospitalization, maternity care, lab work and other eligible medical expenses. Sharing requests are generally processed within 24 hours of receipt either directly to the provider or to the member if payment was made at the time of service.  

United Refuah members are not limited to “in-network providers,” so members are able to use the doctor and hospital of their choice with generous reimbursement limits.
