Ten years ago, Rabbi Dan Roth had dreams of being a Jewish educator in Jerusalem. An immigrant from London, he landed his first job as a teacher for high-risk youth and entered the classroom with high hopes. Unfortunately, his hopes were quickly dashed, as he realized that his students were interested in everything but the Torah he was teaching them.

Torah Live was born from that initial foray into multimedia. The organization has grown over the past ten years, offering over 150 hours of high-quality videos on a myriad of Torah topics, including emunah and tefillah, honoring parents, the power of speech and how to control your anger. Middos, halacha, hashkafa and Jewish holidays are all covered in-depth and with an enthusiasm that’s contagious. Narration, storytelling, animation and special effects all combine to create Hollywood-level productions that educate children and adults about some of the most important topics in Judaism.

In addition to the videos, Torah Live produces stellar educational materials which support teachers in creating lessons that resonate with their students and get them excited about being Jewish.

One Million Views

Since the beginning of the COVID pandemic, Torah Live has reached over 1 million views, 11,000 new families and over 200 schools. In fact, the audience has doubled in just a few months! The Torah Live vision has become all the more important in a world in which much of Jewish education has gone online.

As soon as schools began to shut down in March, Torah Live made the decision to offer all of their videos and educational materials (lesson plans, workbooks, quizzes and more) for free to families and teachers alike. The organization continued to produce films, launching animated videos when COVID precluded live shoots, and is currently planning 15 new ambitious projects. Work is underway on a revolutionary website and a new platform for viewing videos is in the planning stages. At the same time, the uncertain economic situation led to a decrease in sponsorship, forcing Torah Live to think out of the box.

An Exciting Livestream Event

On September 22-23, 2020, Torah Live is holding its first major crowdfunding campaign. It will be accompanied by a Livestream event featuring an interactive concert with Simcha Leiner, a cooking demonstration with celebrity chef Jamie Geller, inspirational messages for asseres yemei teshuva from leading rabbis, panel discussions and behind the scenes looks at Torah Live productions. The event will also feature the world premiere of a new short film on the topic of Gratitude.

The goal of this campaign is to raise $500,000 in 36 hours. All donations are doubled, so every pound donated is actually worth two. Your donation will help fund new productions on chesed and loving-kindness, a series on character trait development, many new chapters of the Emunah & Tefillah series and an expansion of the Hilchos Shabbos series.

With so many children disenfranchised from Judaism, it’s more important than ever to speak to them in their language. Torah Live embodies Torah for OUR generation and it is imperative that it continues to grow and thrive.

A message from the Gutman family, whose story has appeared in Jewish news sites over recent months, as mother Ayala fought bravely against cancer:
 
“Dear Klal Yisroel,

We are writing to you as we mourn the death of our mother, Ayala Gutman A”h.

Our mother was sick with cancer for over 10 years. Throughout it all, her number one priority was to be there for us. Her dream to be healed and cancer free was motivated by her wanting to be able to provide for her family like any other mother does. Unfortunately, just a little over a year ago her cancer spread to her brain. It didn’t take long for the cancer to completely debilitate her.

After a grueling 12 years, and many many aggressive treatments, our mother was niftar. Our father is grieving the loss of his beloved and has been left with tremendous medical debt from all the treatments he paid for in order to help our mother. He has nothing left and needs help getting himself back on his own two feet. It’s been so many years that he has only thought of our mother, we fear he forgot how to take care of himself.

Please help us help him. Anything you can give him to help pay off the medical bills and restabilize himself would be so appreciated. We have already lost our mother to cancer. Please help us keep our father afloat during this difficult time.

Devastating photos emerged this week, as the Stern children said goodbye to their mother, Mrs. Yehudis Stern. Yehudis was a beloved teacher, and a mother of 15.

Her battle with cancer was excruciatingly slow. In her final days, Yehudis was bedridden and her family devoted their time to tending to her needs.

Last week, against all odds, Mrs. Stern was brought to her son’s chuppah. She was unable to stand, but was determined to attend the ceremony. Her family says that she had one dying wish: That her household and children should be taken care of.

Yehudis’s widower Rabbi Stern is now struggling to fulfill her final wishes, as he is now solely responsible for the financial and emotional welfare of a large family, while processing immense grief himself. An emergency fund has been opened for the Stern family to help them overcome this unimaginable tragedy.

Tisha B’av’s come and go – but Hashem gave us Tisha B’av for a reason: So that we change.

So that we grow – especially in mitzvohs of bein odom lechaveiro.  And none is greater – or more badly needed – than shalom.

Cha”zal couldn’t be clearer: Beis Hamikdash was destroyed due to the lack of shalom – and restoring shalom will get it built again.  We live shalom, we live Geula.

But few words are easier said than done, aren’t they? Some people are virtually impossible to live with… some injuries seem impossible to forgive, let alone overcome and forget… family feuds can last decades (with hardly anyone even remembering what they were all about…)So, no.

Shalom is not easy.  But this Tisha B’av you have a real chance to make great strides toward changing your life in a way you may not think possible.

This is because while shalom may not come easy – it’s actually quite simple!

In fact, it takes just 3 things:

A clear-as-day understanding and conviction – etched deeply into your heart – that if you have shalom, you have everything – If don’t have shalom, you have nothing!

You need to be aware of the simple few “rules” of what makes or breaks sholom – and how to apply them in every area of your life. (See more on that later) ·        And you need a decision.  A single-minded resolute determination to go after it, no matter what.
