The world lost another giant last week, with the passing of 59-year-old father of 12 Rabbi Refael Schoenfeld. Schoenfeld was famous throughout Israel for his volunteer work with ZAKA and the Cheva Kadisha. He dedicated his life to giving others a proper Jewish burial. It was with tremendous pain that his colleagues buried him after his life was taken by COVID-19.

More pained than the countless families who had benefited from Rabbi Schoenfeld’s chesed, however, was his own widow and 12 children. They have anxiously awaited his return from the hospital since last month, and have now had to accept that their father is never coming home.

An emergency fund has been started to help the Schoenfeld navigate the future. The fund asks an interesting question, which causes us to re-evaluate the tremendous value of what volunteer heroes do for free:

“We ask you to please take a moment to imagine, if Rabbi Schoenfeld had been paid for his hours volunteering. Doing difficult, painful work that most would be unable to handle. Imagine if he had been paid what he deserved and if that money had gone toward supporting his household. Imagine the amount that work was worth – an unimaginable amount – enough for his family to be comfortable for years to come! But of course he happily gave of himself and saved the reward for the world to come.

Menachem Blau may only be 4 years old, but he’s had more experience with hospitals than most have in a lifetime. That’s because he was born with a rare condition which causes cysts to grow in his throat. Thus began an exhausting cycle in which, every few months, his parents have needed to bring him in to have a surgery so that he can continue to breathe. He has since had a shocking 26 surgeries. His parents have heroically juggled this process together with raising 6 other children.

Recently, Israeli doctors advised that Menachem would need a more complete procedure, which would remove the growth entirely rather than make it smaller. Unfortunately, there are no doctors in Israel qualified to do the surgery. They recommended that the Blaus fly to America immediately, to save their 4 year old’s life.

Though they still lacked funds, everything was in place last month for them to begin their journey when there was a shocking twist: American hospitals were no longer receiving foreign patients due to the coronavirus. The surgery was cancelled.

For the past month, his parents have watched him closely, unable to treat his increasingly labored breathing. Their sense of helplessness weighed heavily.

Now that restrictions have begun to lift, the hospital will now accept Menachem for surgery. His parents are now in a desperate scramble to raise the funds needed to get their children to the United States, all in the name of saving Menachem’s life.

Though those gathering will surely be grateful to be in attendance, however, a shadow of immense grief hangs over the event: The memory of famed baal chesed and father of 11 ‘Abba of Meron’ Reb Bentzion Kuperstock a”h. Despite being a man of modest means, Reb Kuperstock famously gave from his own pocket to feed hundreds of strangers on Meron each year. His intention was pure: To add to the simcha of the event, and feed those who were hungry. This was just a grain of sand in an immense body of acts of chesed.

Kuperstock passed away suddenly from COVID-19 last month. He left behind 11 children and a devastated widow.

Though the world will miss Reb Kuperstock, some have chosen to honor his memory by helping to cover the basic financial needs of his family. Without help, it will be logistically impossible for a single widow to raise 11 children. Donations are being accepted here for a limited time.

It is unclear how long it will take for a baal chesed the caliber of the ‘Abba of Meron’ to rise to the occasion on Har Meron in the future. One thing, however, is certain: His family, and the many whose lives he touched, will never stop feeling his absence.

Rav Yaakov Kolodetsky ztz”l was a renowned talmid chacham, who learned with Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv ztz”l as a chavrusa for many years, as well as being close to many of the leaders of our generation, including Rav Chaim Kanievsky shlita.

R’ Yaakov contracted the virus while visiting the United States, and on the last day of Pesach his health seriously deteriorated and he was hospitalized in Tel Hashomer. The name “Refael” was added along with many heartfelt prayers for his health, but unfortunately he passed away on Tuesday.

He leaves behind his widow and 10 children, 3 of whom are still at home. The family is in dire need of financial support.

The following is a translation of a letter from Rav Yitzchok Kolodetsky shlita, his brother, the son-in-law of Rav Chaim Kanievsky shlita:

“To Acheinu Bnei Yisroel, generous people,

My righteous brother, Rav Yaakov Kolodetsky ztz”l, has passed away from the plague of coronavirus. He was a servant of Hashem, and a baal yissurim who accepted everything with love and complete faith.

He leaves behind his widow and 3 orphans, and many debts, they are like a ship in a raging sea. It is a great mitzvah to support his widow and orphans so the family will not collapse, G-d forbid.

All those who help should be blessed by the Father of all orphans with an abundance of blessing, with success, with physical and mental health, with nachas from their children for generations and with long life.”

Readers around the world were moved last week by the story of Rebbetzin Baila Porush, a 52-year-old mother of 6 who was killed by COVID-19. She was a beloved and spiritual individual, who accepted her many challenges with a sense of positivity. Her death was particularlyshocking because she had been in good condition, then in a matter of minutes, deteriorated so rapidly that she lost her life.

In a shocking turn, her husband Rabbi Tzvi Porush has now passed away as well. A video of Rabbi Porush at his wife’s levaya circulated on Thursday, as he said his hesped from the inside of an ambulance.

Now 6 children, 4 of whom are still behind, are left to mourn. It is noteworthy that the family was still recovering from a tragedy last year in which one of their siblings passed away suddenly.

Funds are being raised to help the remaining members of the Porush family navigate the long road ahead: Basic expenses, and all the other things that living parents would provide.

In light of the extreme social restrictions enforced due to the COVID-19 pandemic, The Bais HaVaad of Lakewood has announced that they will be conducting a full Mechiras Chametz online for anyone in the world.

Typically, the process of authorizing a shaliach to sell your chametz is accompanied by a kinyan suddar (with a pen, handkerchief, or some other utensil). This kinyan is not used to actually effect the sale, but to appoint the attending Rav as your shaliach in the sale to the non-Jew. In lieu of that kinyan, the Bais HaVa’ad has included special language to this year’s form.

The preferred practice is to conduct the authorization to sell one’s chametz in person, leading poskim have unanimously ruled that one should not do so in these extraordinary circumstances.
